about this site

Defay.org is simply a web site to share ideas and meet people with common interests. While the founders of the site share the defay surname, there are others who do not. defay.org is not limited to family members or people with the defay surname. It is an open community site.

If you've got a bit of DeFay in you, and you would like to know how we all relate to one another, please read my family genealogy blog.  Or for info about me, read my min-bio.

What will I find at defay.org?

Full text of my dissertation available

I was recently contacted by a publisher from Lambert Academic Publishing who was interested in publishing my dissertation as a 'print on demand' monograph. I decided not to take them up on their kind offer & have instead published the full text right here on my website free of charge.

Army: Suspect said `Allahu Akbar!' before shooting (AP)

Why is the US media so obsessed with American Muslims?

The US has a severe case of cultural anxiety when it comes to Muslims. Mostly this is because the majority of Americans have a Christian background, but this Christian cultural bias doesn't fully explain a news story like the one below.

Jeff Carlton, the AP reporter who wrote this story, interviewed an imam who knew the shooter writing he 'gave no sign of extremist beliefs and regularly wore his uniform at prayers'. So why the big headline concern over "Allahu Akbar!"?

It's mostly due to ignorance and bigotry about Muslims & Muslim Americans. Think about it for a minute. If a man had screamed 'Jesus' before pulling the trigger, would it be front page news?

Organic & sustainable food options in San Diego

Over the past several year's I've become increasingly interested in local/sustainable and organic food production. It's difficult getting good information about local resources in San Diego county for buying local/sustainable food, so I created this web page to share what I've found and liked in San Diego. Not everything is organic or locally grown as I've noted below, but I find each option infinitely preferable to the supermarket alternative.
