Printer-friendly versionThe DeFay-Perez Family Cabin on Palomar Mountain

IMPORTANT: There are no gas stations after leaving Highway 15 (it's 26 miles up and 26 back). There is very limited cell phone reception on the mountain and we have no telephone at the cabin.
Directions:
From Highway 15, take the Highway 76 exit (Pala Road) east
Stay on the 76 for 20 miles. As you drive, you will pass the Pala casino/hotel on your right, lots of orange groves, Valley Center Road on your right, and finally a fork where the 76 continues on the right and South Grade Road begins on your left
Veer left onto South Grade Road (S6)
Continue up South Grade for 6.8 miles past several cow crossings along this very windy road until you reach the yield sign at the top of the hill
You should now be at the intersection below (marked with the letter B)
At the intersection you'll see a paved road directly in front of you (Crestline Road) and a call box just to your left on the far (east) side of Canfield Road. Between Crestline and the call box there is a steep dirt road that can be hard to see (look for the sign that reads "Palomar Cedars"). That dirt road is our road.
In the sattelite image below (click to enlarge) you'll see a yellow push pin at the begining of our road. Take the road where the pin is and follow it to the first fork (about 100 yards). Take a right at the fork and park, you've made it!
If the ground is dry you should have no trouble going up and down the dirt road in a standard car (drive slowly, there are big ruts). If there is snow or it is wet and muddy, you'll want to park up on the paved road and walk in (or if you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, this is where you'll need it).
If you accidentally go right at the top of S6, you'll pass a firehouse on your left (turn around and try again). If you go left at the intersection instead you'll see a store & restaurant with a payphone.
